As we consume calcium, the acid in the stomach begins to break it down. When broken down, the calcium is transformed into its ionic form, or positive charged state. It is this ionic state that calcium passes through the intestinal tract, into the bloodstream, and into the bones. This is the rate of absorption that determines how much of the calcium we consumed can actually be used by the body. The higher the absorption, the more calcium ions travel in the body.
